Reading Comprehension in Every Subject Area

Question for Teachers:
Should every teacher help support reading comprehension, even outside of English language arts?

Reading comprehension is often seen as the responsibility of English language arts teachers, but students read in every subject area. In science, social studies, math, career and technical education, and the arts, students must understand vocabulary, directions, charts, graphs, informational text, word problems, and written explanations.

When every teacher supports reading comprehension, students can become stronger thinkers and better problem-solvers. Simple strategies such as previewing vocabulary, summarizing text, asking questions, identifying key details, and using evidence can help students understand content more deeply.

As a teacher, what is your opinion? Should reading comprehension be supported in every classroom? What strategies can teachers in all subject areas use to help students become stronger readers?
